The impending rule by the Trump administration requiring all undocumented immigrants to register with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is creating concern and confusion within the immigrant community. We are sharing a factsheet created by the National Immigration Law Center — in both English and Spanish — to help shed some light on the registration process that’s set to begin on April 11.
The Secretary of the DHS has publicly stated that the goal of the registration process is to force people to leave the United States. The federal government plans to use the information they get from registration to find and arrest people, deport them, or pressure them to leave the U.S. on their own. Failing to register brings its own set of repercussions.
Bottom line: Both complying with registration and failing to comply may have substantial negative, life-lasting consequences. The outcome will depend on your individual situation, so we encourage you to speak to an immigration attorney about the registration process before the rule commences in the coming weeks.
The factsheet should not be interpreted as legal advice. Impacted individuals should consult with a trusted immigration attorney to understand the risks registration might present for each personal case.
